6.3 Mile Run - Red Cross New Zealand Earthquake Appeal

On Tuesday 22 February 2011, a devastating 6.3 earthquake hit Christchurch, New Zealand killing around 100 people and injuring around 2,500. In its wake it left a catalogue of human tragedy, suffering and a city in ruins.

The trauma is far from over. Over 150 aftershocks have continued to rock the city, over 2000 people have been displaced, many are now living in tent cities. Of those with houses, most are heavily damaged, without water, electricity and sanitation. The elderly are struggling to cope with circumstances even the young are finding a challenge.

For nearly 3 years Kathryn & I lived in Sumner, Christchurch very close to the epicentre of the quake. We know lots of people affected by the quake.

Rather than sit back and watch report after report we want to do something to help the cities people.

Sponsored 6.3 mile earthquake run

Next weekend we are going to do a sponsored 6.3 mile run in aid of the Red Cross New Zealand Earthquake Appeal.

We would be pleased if you would support us in our efforts to help the people of Christchurch in their time of need.

How can you donate?

Either

  • Send me a cheque made payable to "Paul Johnson" to 30 Ecton Avenue, Macclesfield, Cheshire SK10 1RD
  • Use the online donation facility and email pdjohnson@gmail.com to let us know how much you donated so we can keep a running total

What are the New Zealand Red Cross doing?

New Zealand Red Cross is playing a critical role in the emergency response:

  • supporting the international Urban Search and Rescue teams
  • looking after more than 1,000 people in five welfare centres across the city
  • registering on a national database the details of people affected by the quake, and
  • checking on residents in their homes as part of Operation Suburb door-to-door outreach.

Huge thanks to everyone who has sponsored us so far!

  • Helen Gingell
  • Alan Ditchfield
  • David & Helen Johnson
  • Betty & Peter Morris
  • Generous sponsorship from Nick Shatwell of Safety Screens
  • The Rowntree family
  • Hazel Johnson
  • Joanne Sellars

Three sites to help people in Christchurch

Labels:

Christchurch Earthquake collection of best links

Having lived in Christchurch for nearly 3 years and formed a huge bond with the place and New Zealand I have been struck to the core over the recent earthquake. So many people hurt, many lives shattered and beautiful heritage buildings no more than dusty ruins.

Now some time has passed since the initial shocks a more representative picture of what has happened is emerging on the web. With so many people having a connection with this beautiful city around the world I thought I would collate some links to information and images I found useful and interesting.

Fantastic authentic Italian Cafe

The only problem when you taste the best overseas is you can't find it at home. I often wish I could buy a great Italian coffee but rarely can cafes in the UK make one.

Brookside nursery, Poynton is a regular haunt of ours, our daughter loves the narrow gauge railway. The main cafe is expensive and frankly bad. Little did we realise tucked at the back of the garden centre is a fantastic authentic Italian cafe and their coffee is simply unbeatable.

Lyme Park, best playground in North West?

The National Trust have boldly closed the existing good playgrounds and replaced them with a daring new playscape. Featuring adventurous landscaping with rock steps to clamber over, huge slides, long high level monkey bridges, tunnels it's a brilliant place for kids.

Not suitable for toddlers but a refreshing change to see something which stimulates the older ones.

Parkers Guide for iphone

I'm hardly a car lover, I found myself this week having to face the arduous task of buying a second hand car. This time round I was far better equipped thanks to iPhone, Autotrader and Parkers guide iPhone apps.

The real hero, Parkers, translated horribly complex tables in the printed version featuring hideous mileage conversion tables into a slick, easy to use iOs interface. At £5.99 costly but worth every single penny.

Cornerhouse 1st Floor Cafe, Manchester

At the top of Oxford Road the Cornerhouse is a well established art house cinema and exhibition space. The cafe is always busy but still manages to be relaxing. Enjoy a window seat and muse at the passing traffic, students and hubbub whilst sinking in to some terrific home made cakes. These are the kind dieters should avoid, but sensational cup cakes, chocolate cake and Danish pastries like dinner plates. All good and the Illy coffee is perfect.
